What We're All About
St James sees itself as part of the family of churches serving God in New Plymouth. We are Presbyterian and evangelical in flavour.
Although we don't hang our vision statement on the front door, what inspires us are phrases like enjoying God, talking about Jesus, and living graciously. It's towards these ends that our services of worship (and not just Sunday 'worship') are shaped.
If you turned up on Sunday you'd find us pretty informal, with probably far too many 'in jokes' being fired across the auditorium! Neil organises the music which is contemporary but not real loud and rocky. Paul does most of the preaching and aims to be biblically-theologically based - not really into 'therapeutic' sermons. We celebrate communion on the first Sunday of each month, and most of our baptisms are of the full-immersion, believer variety (rather than the sprinkle, baby type).
Kids and the elderly are an important part of our church and so significant ministry resources are put into the edges of the age spectrum. Everyone is encouraged to be involved in some sort of Christian education (youth groups, alpha, bible studies etc) and ministry - especially community facing ministry.
In short, like most churches we try our best to encourage each other to follow Jesus and work towards God's coming Kingdom.
